Short description

Wingspan is a family / strategy board game in which you put birds in different habitats. Each bird needs food to be placed and depending on the place on the board, it also needs some investment of eggs.

The educative part of the game is that each ‘bird-card’ contains information about that specific bird.

Wingspan has started with birds from North America and is extended with birds from Europe (1) Oceania (2) and Asia (3). The Asia-extension has a special gameplay for 2 players and for 6 to 7 players (a flock).

Educational Value

  • Ornithology – the content value of the game is in the information about the birds, the breeding areas, the behavior of the animals and the types of nests they make. Part of that is integrated in the gameplay, part of it is extra information on the cards and not required for the game.
  • Strategy, planning, training executive skills.

Recommendation for use

The game is cleverly made: characteristics of birds are also reflected in the actions you may do as a player. Schedule time to learn the game and to actually play the game.

Tips and tricks

  • You can use the cards separately to talk about the birds.
  • Use the cards and add different assignments – e.g. make pairs with the same type of birds, same area of nesting etc.
